"Pigs Can Fly" by Xande

I hope you were fortunate enough to grow up listening the the band "The Irish Rovers" and their song "Pigs can Swim and Pigs can Fly

This is a baby quilt that Xande's friend drew the artwork, then she ran it through her computer program to make the paper piecing pattern. 

Amazing detail in her piecing, although a little difficult to quilt at times because of the bulky seams.  I think worth the effort though.  Can't believer she's gibing this to an infant!

 

"Ozzie the Ostrich" by Xande is ready to join his brother Mingo the Flamingo.

Sorry Mingo but Ozzie was more fun to quilt/  All those glorious feathers to play in!  And his legs!  Such fun to dimple those

Of course I had to add eyelashes.

 

"Mingo the Flamingo" by Xande

He is taking flight!  Still needs binding, and that is today's project.  So much fun to quilt!  I loved the freehand swirling clouds/wind in the background, and of course h needed lots of feathers.

Flaming pink feathers, but plumey ones on the black.  Better lift that way!

And nearly finished on my machine.
 

Two baby quilts from Xande for extra special little girls.

I am so lucky to have recently welcomed "Juniper Lee" my first great-niece into our family.  As an "honorary Auntie", Xande graciously made this AMAZING quilt for her.  All paper pieced which blows my mind, but also designed by Xande!! 

Since we jokingly refer to our group of biking friends as "the flock" for our tendency to wear flamingo tights, this little girl has flamingos in her dress.  Her mother, Katie's favorite color is purple, and she loves fairies, so the background took care of that design.  (And they glow in the dark!)  Simply stunning!  Quilted with a free hand edge to edge design of mostly feathers (for the flock), but also swirls in her hair since we all have such curly hair.

Then Xande's daughter Fiona announced that she was going to have a baby too!  "Grandma Xande" dove into action to make this one that represents to many favorite childhood books of Fiona's.  While I've never met her in person, I know that the girl in the quilt represents Fiona as a child, engrossed in a book while all of the characters swirl above her head.  Again, all paper pieced and designed by Xande.  I quilted primarily a swirling leaf design to represent the trees that result in paper for books.

Paddington Bear, complete with suitcase and tag that reads "Please take care of this bear."

Dr. Seuss and his "Sam I am" from "Greens Eggs and Ham".  The green bits in the quilt are the eggs and ham.  

Cheshire Cat from "Alice In Wonderland"

Clearly a dragon, but I'm not sure what book it represents.  I'm guessing Lord of the Rings and those are the other characters from the Tolkein series. (I have to point out, even though you can't see it, I quilted flames coming from the dragon's mouth)

"Robin's Quilt" by Xande

I had saved these with the correct orientation and now they are still sideways (Stupid computer).  Here is "Robin's Quilt" a new-ish relative of Xande's  The background that makes up the mountain for the robin to stand on is all different books.  How appropriate!  All paper pieced because that's what Xande loves to do

Not sure what the books the unicorn and Firebird  represent.

Clearly Robin needs a robin on her quilt.

"Little Mermaid"

And any number of books about dragons.

 

"Birds" for Jim by Xande

This quilt has been a long time coming.  

Jim had a "significant" birthday in June of 2020, but will soon be receiving his birthday quilt.  Each and every one of these blocks is paper pieced, and some of the pieces are microscopic All of the blocks were SID around their sashing, then a bit of background fill around the birds.  Due to the numerous layers at times, I knew that I wouldn't be able to quilt over all the birds, so I just left them alone. Truly stunning.

The crane is extra large, so he got a bit more detail in his background  some SID around the fencing, and a of texture on the flooring

 

"Unicorn" by Xande

 Okay, so the pink animal in the center of the quilt is a zebra, but since it's pink, my mind thinks it's a unicorn.  This quilt is for her niece who loves pink, hence the pink zebra.

and of course Giraffe.  Love the paper piecing, glad I don't have to do it!  Quilted with hearts in hot pink for the niece's favorite color.

Cats and a Cardinal by Xande

Xande and her love of paper piecing, or foundation piecing always amazes me.  I can do it, but I am not a fan.  All the more reason to admire her work.

 I have seen her cat patterns before, but the Cardinal in the window was a new one for me.

 I think the cat above is based on her "grand-cat" Pixel who is a Bengal

 This one might be her cat Gaston, but he doesn't have a pattern of cats in white in his fur.  Just some white bits.

 Not sure who these two kitties are, but they seem to be having fun at the party.  This quilt also gave me a new background fill.  We're calling it "yarn balls".  Small squiggle of quilting in a circle to represent the ball of yarn that the cats are chasing, then swirly bits around to the next ball of yarn.
